Skill and Competence

How do we ever expect to be good at something if we don’t work at it every day.  You’ll never get from unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence unless we do the work at (whatever we’re looking to get good at) it every single day and let the compound effect go to work for us.

Unconscious incompetence – We don’t know that we don’t know

Conscious incompetence – We know that we don’t know how to do something

Conscious competence – We know and are getting good at a skill

Unconscious competence – We know and unconsciously operate with this skill without having to think about it

When a skill gets to unconscious competence, you no longer have to think about how to do it anymore. It’s now a “natural” part of you. So skilled that you no longer even have to think about it. I said that twice because it was worth repeating.

Lack of Awareness •—————-•—————–•—————–•> Skilled Stage

No matter how talented you are, your talent will fail you, if you’re not skilled. Skill is achieved through practice. Work hard and dedicate yourself to being better every single day. ~ Will Smith
